David V. Gioe’s Military Service

David remains deeply involved in national security issues (with an active security clearance) thanks to his continued service as a senior officer in the US Navy Reserve. He was Direct Commissioned as a Naval intelligence officer in September 2002 and completed Basic Reserve Intelligence Training in Reserve Intelligence Area 19, Naval Air Facility Andrews, Maryland before reporting to the Office of Naval Intelligence (NR ONI 0566) as Division Officer in the Maritime Terrorism Division from 2003-2007. He then served as the Training and Operations Department Head for Political-Military Affairs Unit 0614. From PMA 0614 he supported the Defense Attaché Office in Vienna, Austria, and participated in PACOM exercises TALISMAN SABER, ULCHI FREEDOM GUARDIAN, KEY RESOLVE, and TERMINAL FURY. Between 2012 and 2014, he served as the OCONUS course director and lead instructor for the Naval Intelligence Officer Basic Course with NR EUCOM JAC 0430 (RAF Molesworth, UK). He also served briefly in USAFRICOM during Operations ODYSSEY DAWN and UNIFIED PROTECTOR.

In December 2014, he was assigned to a DIA 0601 in Ft. Dix, NJ. to support the Defense Debriefing Service but was mobilized to active duty from September 2015 – October 2016 to serve as the CJ2X Director for the Combined Joint Task Force – Horn of Africa. In that capacity he supervised and coordinated Human Intelligence and Counterintelligence for the Department of Defense in East Africa. He was subsequently assigned to DIA's Defense Attache Service from 2018-2022 and served briefly at the Assistant Naval Attache at the US Embassy in London and has routinely supported the United States European Command’s Russia Strategic Initiative.

David is a qualified Information Dominance Warfare Officer and Foreign Area Officer. His military education includes completing National Defense University’s Reserve Component National Security Course, the Naval War College’s Joint Professional Military Education program, both phases of the Joint Foreign Area Officer’s Course, and the J2X Manager's Course. He is the recipient of the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, among other personal and unit awards.
